WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — In an emotional and long-anticipated moment, Purdue University officially inducted the late Caleb Swanigan into the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, honoring not only his historic contributions to Boilermaker basketball but also the enduring legacy he left behind, both in life and after his tragic passing.
Swanigan, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 25, was more than just a basketball star. He was a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and transformation — a young man who rose from homelessness and childhood adversity to become one of the most beloved players in Purdue history and a first-round NBA Draft pick.
“This is a tribute that honors both Caleb’s remarkable achievements in the black and gold and the profound impact his life and passing had on the world of basketball,” said Purdue Athletic Director Mike Bobinski during the Hall of Fame ceremony at Mackey Arena. “Caleb was a giant — not just in stature, but in heart, in spirit, and in inspiration.”
From Adversity to All-American
Swanigan’s journey to Purdue is as legendary as his play. Born in Indianapolis and raised in unstable circumstances, Caleb faced a life defined by poverty, homelessness, and family struggles. But through the support of his adoptive father figure, Roosevelt Barnes — and his own unrelenting will — Swanigan transformed his life.
He became a McDonald’s All-American and the No. 1 recruit in Indiana, eventually choosing Purdue over several national powerhouses. Many questioned whether he could live up to the hype — Swanigan didn’t just meet expectations; he shattered them.
In just two years at Purdue (2015–2017), Swanigan carved out a legacy that ranks among the greatest in program history. As a sophomore, he averaged 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, leading the Boilermakers to a Big Ten title and the Sweet 16.

After his collegiate career, Swanigan was selected 26th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He played in the NBA for parts of three seasons, also spending time with the Sacramento Kings. But even as his professional career was unfolding, Swanigan remained connected to the community.
He used his platform to speak out about youth homelessness, obesity, and the importance of education. Having once weighed over 360 pounds as a child, Swanigan’s transformation into a Division I athlete was a story that inspired thousands.
“You can come from anywhere and still get somewhere,” he once said in a widely shared interview. “Your past doesn’t define your future.”
