When Karl-Anthony Towns walked onto the stage to be inducted into the University of Kentucky Hall of Fame, the crowd stood in roaring applause. But what followed was not just another acceptance speech—it was a deeply emotional, heartfelt moment that revealed the vulnerability, gratitude, and enduring spirit of a man who has carried both triumph and pain on his journey.
With his voice trembling and eyes glistening with tears, Towns began by honoring the woman who shaped his very existence—his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns.
“Every step I’ve taken, every basket I’ve made, and every victory I’ve celebrated always had one constant—my mom,” Towns said softly, pausing as the arena fell silent. “She was my number one fan, my best friend, my biggest critic, and my greatest source of love. Losing her left a hole that I can never fill, but tonight, I feel her presence right here with me.”
Towns lost his mother in 2020 to complications from COVID-19, a tragedy that shook not only his family but the entire basketball community. He admitted that the road after her passing was one of the hardest challenges of his life.
“There were days I didn’t want to pick up a basketball. There were nights I sat in my room crying, asking God why her,” he shared, his voice breaking. “But my mom taught me resilience. She told me that life would test me, but I had to keep standing. And standing here today, I want to believe she is proud of the man I’ve become.”
Shifting to his Kentucky journey, Towns recalled the moment he first put on the Wildcats jersey, describing it as a dream fulfilled.
“When I came to Kentucky, I was just a young kid from New Jersey with big dreams,” he said. “Coach Cal believed in me, this program believed in me, and the fans—Big Blue Nation—embraced me like family. I came here to play basketball, but I left here with values, friendships, and memories that shaped me for life.”
He spoke about the challenges of competing at the highest level in college basketball, the pressure of expectations, and the brotherhood he formed with his teammates. “We weren’t just teammates; we were brothers. We pushed each other every day, we cried together after tough losses, and we celebrated together after big wins. That bond is forever, and it started here in Lexington.”
But beyond basketball, Towns emphasized how his Kentucky experience prepared him for life’s challenges. “The lessons I learned here went beyond the court. I learned discipline, sacrifice, and what it means to represent something bigger than myself. Those lessons gave me the strength to keep going after losing my mom, after facing setbacks in the NBA, and after doubting myself.”
At one point, he addressed the young athletes in the audience, offering heartfelt advice. “Don’t take a single moment for granted. Hug your loved ones tighter, call your parents more often, and cherish the little things. Because at the end of the day, life isn’t just about trophies or records—it’s about the people you love and the memories you create with them.”
The emotion in his words touched everyone present, from former teammates to fans who had watched his career blossom. Towns admitted that this honor was not just his alone but a shared achievement with those who had supported him.
“This isn’t just about me. This is about my teammates who believed in me, my coaches who pushed me, my fans who cheered for me, and my family who loved me unconditionally. Most of all, this is about my mom. Every award I get, every milestone I achieve, it belongs to her too.”
He ended his speech with a message that reflected both his gratitude and his enduring hope.
“Being inducted into the Kentucky Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors of my life. But what makes it special is knowing that I can stand here, share my story, and hopefully inspire someone out there to keep going no matter what life throws at them. To Big Blue Nation, thank you for making me one of your own. To my mom, I love you, and this is for you.”
