The Golden State Warriors‘ playoff journey hit a rough and rather disappointing dead end after a grueling series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Former NBA great Dwyane Wade didn’t mince his words when it came to evaluating Jimmy Butler’s performance.
Butler joined the Warriors following a major midseason trade, bringing with him hopes of lifting the team’s prospects sky-high. The Warriors briefly sparkled, snatching Game 1 on enemy turf despite Stephen Curry being sidelined. But Curry’s absence was like a gaping hole too wide to leap across, and the Timberwolves quickly found their stride, storming back to take four consecutive victories and claiming the series in a brisk five games.
With Curry out, the spotlight was on Butler to become the beacon of leadership, but Wade voiced his disappointment with how Butler handled the series. Known for his rugged playoff spirit, Butler’s performance fell short, leaving fans and, notably, Wade, yearning for more during those critical moments.
“I didn’t like the way he just approached the game,” Wade candidly remarked. “Jimmy’s a pass-first guy, always eager to pull his teammates into the spotlight. But sometimes, when the chips are down, you need to take the reins. He seemed almost hesitant, and that’s not the Butler we’ve seen before.”
Wade drew parallels with his time at the Heat, emphasizing the need to seize pivotal moments with both hands. “Pat Riley didn’t just hold back an extension over injuries; it’s about showing up when it really counts. Jimmy’s got too much talent not to leave his mark on the game,” Wade stressed.
Reflecting on Butler’s past playoff heroics, Wade noted, “We saw Jimmy in the bubble, we saw him in the Finals against Denver—he was a force to be reckoned with. But in this series, he seemed restrained. Even when the shots aren’t dropping, you have to keep firing. Shying away from the basket when it matters is poor strategy, especially when your team is depending on you.”
