Glenn “The Big Dog” Robinson Donates $7.5M to Launch Purdue’s Boilermakers Youth Development Program
In a landmark moment for Purdue University and the state of Indiana, basketball legend Glenn “The Big Dog” Robinson has stepped up in a big way—this time, off the court. Robinson has donated $7.5 million to launch and expand the Boilermakers Youth Development Program, a transformative initiative aimed at mentoring and developing young athletes across Indiana.
The gift, announced by Purdue’s Athletic Department, is one of the largest ever made by a former Boilermaker athlete. It will fund state-of-the-art training facilities, structured mentorship programs, and long-term academic and athletic development for youth participants. The program’s mission is simple yet powerful: to equip Indiana’s next generation of athletes with the tools, guidance, and opportunities to succeed—not only in sports, but in life.
A Legacy Reimagined
Robinson, who rose to national prominence in the early 1990s as a dominant force at Purdue, has long been revered for his prowess on the court. The 1994 consensus National Player of the Year and No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick, Robinson brought pride and visibility to Purdue basketball on a national stage. Now, he’s bringing that same energy and dedication back to his alma mater—but with a new purpose.
“This university gave me so much,” Robinson said in a statement. “Now it’s my turn to give back. I want to see the next generation of Indiana kids dream big, work hard, and have the resources they need to chase those dreams.”
Robinson’s donation will fund the development of a new youth sports and mentoring complex on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus, which will serve as the hub of the Boilermakers Youth Development Program. The facility will offer year-round training camps, academic enrichment sessions, leadership development workshops, and access to current and former Purdue athletes as mentors.
Building More Than Athletes
What sets the Boilermakers Youth Development Program apart is its holistic approach. Rather than focusing solely on athletic achievement, the program emphasizes character development, academic support, and personal growth. By integrating athletics with mentorship and educational programming, Purdue aims to prepare young athletes for success on and off the court.
“This isn’t just about building better players,” said Purdue Athletic Director Mike Bobinski. “It’s about building better people. Glenn’s vision and generosity are helping us redefine what youth athletic development can look like—not just at Purdue, but across the entire state.”
Initial phases of the program will target underserved communities throughout Indiana, with plans to expand access through regional partnerships, mobile training units, and scholarship opportunities. Young athletes will be invited to Purdue for week-long camps and mentorship retreats, where they’ll receive elite instruction from Purdue coaches, trainers, and alumni.
A Boilermaker’s Heart
Glenn Robinson’s impact on Purdue basketball is legendary. During his two-year career with the Boilermakers, he averaged 27.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, leading Purdue to a Big Ten Championship and an Elite Eight appearance. He later went on to a successful 11-year NBA career, including an All-Star selection and an NBA Championship with the San Antonio Spurs.
But beyond the stats and accolades, Robinson has always identified with the Boilermaker spirit of resilience and determination. Growing up in Gary, Indiana, he knows firsthand the challenges many young athletes face—challenges he now aims to help others overcome.
“Coming from where I came from, I know how important it is to have someone believe in you,” Robinson said. “This program is about giving kids that belief, that structure, and that push they need.”
A New Era for Purdue Athletics
The Boilermakers Youth Development Program is part of a broader strategic initiative at Purdue to expand community outreach and youth engagement through athletics. With Robinson’s donation as the catalyst, the university hopes to attract further support from alumni, corporate partners, and state leaders.
Purdue President Mung Chiang called the donation “a transformational gift that speaks to the heart of what the university stands for.”
“Glenn Robinson has always been a champion—in sports and in life,” Chiang said. “With this gift, he’s ensuring that future generations can follow in his footsteps, no matter where they come from.”
Looking Ahead
Construction on the youth development complex is expected to begin in early 2026, with the first phase of programming slated to launch by the fall. As excitement builds, one thing is clear: Glenn Robinson’s legacy at Purdue is no longer confined to the hardwood.
With his $7.5 million gift, “The Big Dog” is now playing a different kind of game—one with the power to uplift communities, inspire youth, and change lives across Indiana for decades to come.
