New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty made a generous gesture by giving up his No. 22 jersey to new teammate Juan Soto, and the star outfielder showed his appreciation in a big way.

As a thank-you gift, Soto surprised Baty with a brand-new SUV, complete with a bow on the hood. The Mets’ newest slugger, who recently signed a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract, explained the gift by saying, “I really appreciate the number. This is the first one I ever wore. I wanted to give you something nice.”

Baty was stunned by the gesture, responding, “Well, this is definitely really nice,” before getting into the driver’s seat for the first time.

Soto has worn No. 22 throughout his MLB career with the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, and New York Yankees, and he will continue to do so in Mets colors.

His arrival bolsters a Mets team that made a surprise run to the NLCS last season before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team also retained slugger Pete Alonso, providing Soto with valuable protection in the lineup.

However, Alonso’s return could impact Baty’s chances of making the Opening Day roster. If Alonso had left, third baseman Mark Vientos might have shifted to first base, creating an opportunity for Baty at third. Instead, Vientos is now expected to take over at third base following a strong second half and postseason performance, where he hit 27 home runs in 111 regular-season games.

Baty, who played 50 games last season and hit .229 with four home runs, faces an uncertain roster spot heading into the season. But whether he makes the Opening Day lineup or not, he’ll be leaving spring training with a brand-new set of wheels.
