*Mark Williams” Schedules Visit to ‘Dream School. Over Southern Cal, Texas, and Purdue.
In a major recruiting development, five-star forward and rising 7-footer Mark Williams has officially scheduled a visit to his self-described “dream school” — Duke University — and has subsequently committed to the Blue Devils, choosing them over strong final contenders USC, Texas, and Purdue.
The announcement came just days after Williams completed a string of unofficial visits and evaluated his future both academically and athletically. Widely considered one of the most promising big men in the 2025 class, Williams brings an elite mix of size, defensive prowess, and improving offensive versatility that made him one of the most coveted prospects in the country.
The Decision
Williams, speaking with media after finalizing his commitment, made it clear that his decision came down to more than just basketball.
“Duke has always been that place in my mind. I grew up watching them dominate on TV, and the way they develop players, especially guys with my skill set, really stuck with me,” Williams said. “After visiting campus and talking with Coach [Jon] Scheyer and the staff, I just felt like it was home. It wasn’t even close after that.”
Sources close to Williams say the visit to Durham sealed the deal. The coaching staff reportedly laid out a clear developmental plan that includes immediate playing time and long-term NBA preparation — a combination that few schools can match as effectively as Duke.
Why Duke?
Williams’ commitment continues Duke’s stronghold on elite frontcourt talent. Known for molding big men into NBA-ready products — from Zion Williamson to Paolo Banchero — the program emphasized its track record during Williams’ visit. But the appeal wasn’t just on the court.
Williams cited Duke’s academic reputation, culture, and the opportunity to grow as both a player and a person.
“It’s the full package,” he added. “They care about you as more than just an athlete. That stood out in every conversation I had.”
Who Duke Beat Out
While Duke was always a major player in Williams’ recruitment, programs like Southern California, Texas, and Purdue made compelling pitches.
-
USC offered the West Coast lifestyle and a recent history of big-man development under Coach Andy Enfield, especially with NBA names like Evan Mobley.
-
Texas sold Williams on the opportunity to be the centerpiece of a surging program under Coach Rodney Terry, with strong NIL opportunities and a large media market.
-
Purdue, long known for producing elite bigs such as Zach Edey, pitched a system tailored to a true 7-footer, emphasizing structure, spacing, and individual growth.
Still, none of them could match the emotional pull and prestige of Duke, especially with their consistent national exposure and alumni success.
Scouting Profile
Standing at 7’0” with a 7’5” wingspan, Williams possesses a rare blend of rim protection, rebounding, and offensive upside. He’s a fluid athlete with improving touch around the basket and an emerging mid-range jumper. Scouts also rave about his ability to defend in space and switch onto smaller guards — a crucial skill in today’s game.
On the EYBL circuit, Williams averaged 15.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game this summer, earning MVP honors at several showcase events. His motor and work ethic have drawn comparisons to former Duke big man Wendell Carter Jr.
What’s Next
With Williams in the fold, Duke’s 2025 recruiting class now features one of the most imposing defensive anchors in the country. He’s expected to be a day-one contributor and could very well be a one-and-done prospect if his offensive game continues to develop at its current rate.
As for Williams, he’s just ready to get started.
“Now that the decision’s made, it’s all about getting better, staying focused, and representing Duke the right way.”
