Alabama has named Richard Sherman as its new assistant defensive backs coach, sources confirmed to multiple outlets today. The former Seahawks superstar, five-time Pro Bowler, and architect of Seattle’s legendary secondary will join Kalen DeBoer’s staff with a mandate to instill technical precision, unrelenting swagger, and elite-level credibility into the Crimson Tide’s cornerback and safety rooms.
Sherman, 37, retired from the NFL after the 2021 season following stints with the Seahawks, 49ers, Buccaneers, and Vikings. Known for his trash-talking bravado, lockdown coverage that turned the “Legion of Boom” into a household name, he brings a resume that includes a Super Bowl title (XLVIII), three first-team All-Pro selections, and 37 career interceptions. Now, he’s trading the broadcast booth and podcast mic for the sidelines in Tuscaloosa.
DeBoer, who has aggressively pursued NFL-caliber talent to bolster Alabama’s staff since taking over from Nick Saban, sees Sherman as the perfect fit for a secondary looking to reclaim dominance in the SEC.
“Richard’s not just a name he’s a teacher,” one Alabama staffer told reporters on background. “He’s got the tape study habits, the press-man technique, the pre-snap reads. And he knows how to get in a kid’s head the right way, make them believe they’re the best on the field.”
The hire comes at a pivotal time for Alabama’s defense. After a 2025 season where the secondary showed flashes but struggled with consistency against explosive passing attacks, the Tide need to reload. Incoming recruits and transfers eyeing the DB room will now have direct access to a legend who once blanketed the likes of Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, and Antonio Brown.
